Aloe Vera

ALOE VERA
(Aloe barbadensis)

Featuring formidable hydrating, soothing and cooling properties, our aloe vera is harvested in the morning to maximise the amount of juice the sword-shaped fronds yield, before being freeze-dried to create a powder.

Calendula

CALENDULA EXTRACT
(Calendula officinalis)

Well-known for its calming and soothing effect on skin, we source our calendula from Egypt, where our ingredient is solvent extracted from the petals of the flower.

Chamomile

CHAMOMILE EXTRACT
(Anthemis nobilis)

Legendary for its skin-soothing properties, the flowers of this aromatic perennial are harvested in England in the summer, before the ingredient is solvent extracted from the fragrant flower.

Cucumber

CUCUMBER EXTRACT
(Cucumis sativus)

Loved for its intensely soothing, cooling and hydrating properties, we source our cucumber from within the UK, where our ingredient is produced from the fresh, green flesh of the vegetable.

Aqua (water), Glycerin, Polyglyceryl-10-caprylate, Decyl glucoside, Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf juice, Cucumis sativus (cucumber) fruit extract, Anthemis nobilis (chamomile) flower extract, Calendula officinalis (calendula) flower extract, Humulus lupulus (hops) extract, Phenoxyethanol, Panthenol, Allantoin, Parfum (fragrance), Benzoic acid, Tocopherol (vitamin E), Dehydroacetic acid, Sodium hydroxide, Ethylhexylglycerin, Linalool, Limonene, Citronellol, Geraniol, Coumarin, Citric acid, Potassium sorbate, Glycine soja (soybean) oil.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dreadful - Don't Buy! I like many others have been a faithful purchaser of this product for many years. Now, though I would not buy ever again I'd even go as far to say I wouldn't accept it even as a gift. The formula has changed - it's soapy, sticky just dreadful. Do not waste your money. I have emailed Liz Earle highlighting my observations and await their response. The change as I see it is about increasing margin/profit for Liz Earle and to hell with loyal customers. I'm very disappointed indeed shocked in the company as I can see other reviewers comments intimate that Liz Earle have denied a change in formula - this simply cannot be true.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Goodbye Liz Earle I have been a loyal customer for 20+ years and have loved Liz Earle, but you have ruined this brand, slowly it is becoming like any other mass produced brands! First you ruin the tinted moisturiser and I had to find an alternative now you have ruined the beautiful instant boost. I agree with all your other loyal customers, it's sticky and like putting washing up liquid on your face. My face has now become dry and itchy. It's going in the bin where it belongs! I gave it one star because I couldn't give it zero!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Toner I have bought the facial toner many times over the years . Great for sensitive skin. Can highly recommend it.
Date published: 2022-03-22
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Soapy? I have been using this toner for years. Have the ingredients changed? This time it has a soapy texture that leaves me feeling I need to rinse my face!
Date published: 2022-03-22
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not great! I recently stocked up on Instant Boost Tonic, a LE product which I have been using for many many years, and it just isn't the same as it used to be. Doesn't have that familiar smell and certainly doesn't leave my skin feeling soft. It is like using plain tap water! I am so upset. I remember being assured by LE, quite some years ago now, that the products and integrity of the LE brand would remain the same....but unfortunately that is not great case. It started with the Skin Tint make up base, skin repair moisturiser, Eyebright, Superskin concentrate....and now this. Please listen to your customers.....please.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from What have you done to these products? I have used Liz Earle products for well over 20years and have recommended them to so many people over those years because they contained natural ingredients and were simply fantastic. But what on earth have you done to the Instant Boost Skin Tonic? I honestly thought the cotton wool pads I was using was causing the soapy effect but clearly not judging by all other comments and by me buying cotton wool pads from different shops! This is NOT the fabulous skin tonic we have raved about and bought for years and years. It now feels cheap, soapy and nasty. Your responses to customer comments saying you have changed to a more plant based product is ridiculous and doesn’t make sense - why change? Liz Earle was famous for using plant extracts, natural ingredients and no chemicals. That’s why we brought them and they felt fabulous on our skin! So why change something which doesn’t need changing? Listen to your customers and revert back to the old formulation. I am not interested in buying such an inferior product in future and the bottles I bought recently have been disposed as I won’t put this awful mess near my skin. I’ve never been more disappointed in a brand which I trusted above all other skincare products.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed at other reviews I was going to treat myself to this for Mother’s Day but after reading the reviews, I don’t think I’ll bother. If they go back to the tried and tested formula we all know and love then I’ll definitely buy again. Luckily I still have a bottle of the original formula to tide me over. Please sort it guys x

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful …why did you change it . I have used Liz Earle for years and loved all the products …but now the toner has completely changed it leaves behind a sticky residue /doesn’t smell or feel the same and is nothing like the original toner ! The eye bright was also one of my favourite products and that has completely changed too. Such a shame as they were both fab , I only used each of these new products for a couple of days and then gave up, so I definitely won’t be purchasing either again .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow, really helps my skin I bought this a few months back and it’s been such a great product. I really appreciate using it after a long day and the effect it has is really refreshing and helps my skin stay healthy and clear. Great stuff

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Refreshing skin tonic I have been using this product for years, refreshing skin tonic that doesn't dry out my skin.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointed. I just came online to check what other people thought before posting my review and it seems I am not alone. I was so disappointed when I opened this product in its new packaging. I thought that it was just the packaging that would have changed. First of all the way it comes out of the bottle is sluggish and messy, and oh no, the smell I loved has gone. A huge part of my using this product especially during lockdowns!! I am sad the way the products all look the same in their new packaging, the font is smaller and harder to read and the formula has clearly been changed. You can see that by comparing old and new bottles. As to whether it has the same effect, time will tell. I will now be thinking twice, maybe three times about buying this product in the future. I hope the new owners of Liz Earle are reading these reviews. If not, sales figures will get their attention.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Used to be great now just dreadful Like other reviews I've been using this product for years because it made my skin feel and look fresh and clean. This latest bottle leaves my skin feeling sticky and has caused me to break out in spots. I'm not going to buy this product again from LE..
Date published: 2022-03-09
Rated 1 out of 5 by from What has happened???? Have been loyal LE customer for many, many years but seriously disappointed with changes to toner. Now very foamy, made my eyes sting and smells different too. Thought it might just be a 'bad batch' but having read some of the recent reviews, clearly it's not. Please change back to original formula!!
Date published: 2022-03-09
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not what it used to be ......disappointing ! I bought this just over a month ago and the product has changed massively. The bottle has been redesigned but the tonic has a chemical scent, feels soapy on the skin which leaves a sticky residue. I have been using Liz Earle for a long time but won’t be purchasing this again anytime soon.
Date published: 2022-03-08
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice enough It has changed from the original tonic. The bottle it comes is has obviously changed and I don’t like it as much as the old design bottle but also the tonic itself has a more almost soapy consistency. The old tonic seemed gentler on the skin. I’d like some feedback as to why the changes? I used the old tonic for years and loved it but now am looking elsewhere for an alternative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smells great skin loved it Love love love it I have never been disappointed with any of Liz earles products used them for years at 66 my skin is tip top thank you
Date published: 2022-03-04
Rated 1 out of 5 by from If it ain't broke, don't fix it Why on earth would the 'experts' at Liz Earle deem it necessary to radically change the recipe for the skin tonic? This product has been a much loved part of the range since the 1990s, without any alteration. This new offering is vile. Sticky, odourless and totally unrefreshing. If Liz Earle intend to persist with this revolting new formula, sales will undoubtedly plummet. I would strongly advise reverting to the original product. Perhaps money will eventually talk, or perhaps you couldn't care less about customer satisfaction/loyalty. I suspect it will be the latter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from instant skin tonic boost I’ve used this product for many years in conjunction with cleanse and polish. And face cream. It’s amazing. I couldn’t be without it. It does what it says on the tin. Skin tonic boost xx
Date published: 2022-03-03
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful new product!! I have been using the skin tonic for 5 years and have always loved the effect on my skin, the fragrance and gentle formula. After using up most of the “old” product I used the new product, which left me with tight dry skin, and stinging eyes. What have you done to it? Comparing the ingredients there are some changes in quantity and new ingredients / omissions. I will not be using this product again. Such a shame as I am a loyal Liz Earle customer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Changed for the Worse I am devastated that you have changed this formula. I loved this product and loved how it smelled and how it made my skin feel. I hate the feel of this new product. As other reviewers have said it is foamy and sticky and smells cheap. I question whether it is right to have this listed as the same product with associated good reviews as it is totally different. Please bring back the old one, I loved Liz Earle but lots of changes being made that aren’t for the better which makes me sad. These products were great for my skin but I am not sure they will be going forward.
Date published: 2022-02-23
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Have you changed the formula? I’ve used Liz Earle products for many, many years and loved the toner, but since you’ve changed the packaging I’m wondering if Liz Earle has changed the formula as it now feels ‘soapy’ when used after cleansing and leaves my skin dry and initially after applying, a little irritated? I recently purchased an Instant Boost Skin toner from another site which came in the ‘old’ bottle and have had no problems with it, it feels like it usually does.
Date published: 2022-02-23
Rated 2 out of 5 by from What have they done??? I have used this product for many years and having used up my old stock am now using the new version. What have they done to it? It foams up when applying feeling soapy and leaves my skin feeling very dry. The new packaging is also rubbish. The old twist cap was so much better. I can't help feeling cost cutting is the reason behind these changes and it shows. Once I have used up my existing stock I will definitely be looking for a new product. So disappointing after many years of loving the products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zingy and wakes you up! I regularly buy this product as part of my 3 step routine… I love the spray bottle in the morning as it really wakens me up! It’s ZINGY!!! I like using just the pour bottle on cotton wool in the evening It dries quickly and leaves me feeling fresh and refreshed
Date published: 2022-02-22
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Instant Boost Skin Tonic I love Liz Earle products and used them for a few years now and there isn't anything I don't like but I'm sure the Instant Boost Skin tonic's formula has changed and my face often feels sticky and dry after, instead of rehydrated, clean and fresh. Has anyone else noticed this?
Date published: 2022-02-22
Rated 3 out of 5 by from What has happened to the top? I have been using this toner for years and the twist top was just perfect. On my last order the capped lid was evident, this soon snapped off and you cannot control the tonic as easily. Maybe this is a way of making you buy more, as it is used so much quicker. Such a shame it has changed and I like the lotion itself, hence why I have given it less stars.

Why can’t I buy the pump action version of face wash, I really don’t like the squeezy tube. Fortunately I am still able to buy it n a high street store.

Thank you or your question. We can confirm that we have discontinued our Instant Boost Skin Tonic Spritzer 200ml. You can still purchase our alcohol-free hydrating tonic in the regular 200ml bottle, we have recently updated the styale of the pack and now this is a rounded bottle with a flip cap lid. If you still have your old spritzer bottle we recommend refilling and re-using it, once you have washed and dried it thoroughly. We hope this information is helpful, but please do not hesitate to contact our customer centre team on 01983 813913 if we can be of any further assistance. – Liz Earle Beauty Co.

I would also like to know whether LE is doing anything about the change in formula given all the negative reviews. It doesn’t look like anything has progressed in the last 2 months when you said you were working on a solution ….

Most disappointed by the change in formulation of your skin tonic, but even more disappointed that the change is not highlighted on website, which is unethical considering your target customers. Please explain why not. (& cf John Lewis website).

Asked by: jr12
Thank you or your question. We can confirm that we have replaced the synthetic PEGs in both our Instant Boost Skin Tonic and Eyebright Soothing Eye Cleanser with gentler, certified sustainable plant-based alternatives. We understand that increasingly customers want to use only the most gentle, naturally derived ingredients on their skin. Recently, the safety of PEGs (polyethylene glycol) has come under scrutiny. This is less to do with the PEGs themselves and more to do with the potentially problematic impurities that can be created as by-products when they are synthesised. While many suppliers have updated their processes to eliminate these risks, many customers prefer to avoid PEGs altogether. You may find our blog about PEGS’s and the changes we are making an interesting read: https://www.lizearle.com/beauty-blog/our-blog/210721/faqs-why-we-are-removing-PEGs-from-our-formulas.html Although we have replaced this synthetic ingredient, the naturally active ingredients within our Instant Boost Skin Tonic remain unchanged, and are included at the same levels as they were previously. We’d like to share our sincerest apologies with you, as we recognise that these changes have affected your product experience, and that we should have communicated them more clearly. We have listened to your feedback and we are now working on a solution for this as quickly as possible. If you have any other questions or if there is anything else we can help with, please call our customer centre team on 01983 813913. – The Liz Earle Beauty Co Team.

What's happened to this previously reliable product? I've been this on my rosacea prone skin for 15 years with no problems. New formula has irritated my skin & made my eyes sore. Please give us the option of the old formula!

Asked by: GHarris
Hi there, thanks for getting in touch. We are very sorry to hear you have experienced a reaction. All of our formulations are made to be as mild and gentle as possible and all products are assessed and approved by independent safety experts prior to placing them on the market. While our recent update to replace PEGs with plant-based alternatives is intended to make the formulation gentler for the majority of our customers, we are aware that every individual is different, and some people can react to ingredients that are gentle for most people, in the same way that some individuals have specific food intolerances. Please do email us at naturallyactive@lizearle.com and include the batch code of the product which can be found on the base, for example - U1234A, and where this was purchased.
