What is double cleansing?

Properly cleansing your skin is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to achieve a glowing, healthy complexion. By adopting a double cleansing routine, you can be certain that your skin is thoroughly clean, creating a perfect foundation for the rest of your products. Double cleansing is a technique that originated in Japan and Korea, regions that have long valued the importance of thorough cleansing to achieve radiant skin. Now, it has become a cornerstone of beauty routines worldwide.

As Liz Earle Beauty Co. Lifestyle Ambassador, Sarah Carr, explains: double cleansing is a two-step process that involves using an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser. This method ensures that all traces of make up, sunscreen, and impurities are removed, leaving your skin fresh and ready to absorb the benefits of the other products in your routine. We sat down with Sarah Carr to discuss the effectiveness of double cleansing and the amazing visible results they offer when used together.

Why the cloth is so important

The pure cotton cloth is more than just a skincare accessory – it’s a crucial component of the Cleanse & Polish™ system that helps to make this face cleanser so effective. Exfoliation is essential for maintaining clear, healthy-looking skin, and this is where the cloth excels.

During the day, our skin is exposed to dirt, debris and environmental pollutants, not to mention SPF, make up and excess oils. The aim of a face cleanser is to remove these impurities, preventing breakouts, clogged pores and dull skin. When you use Cleanse & Polish™, the bio-fusion formula works in harmony with the pure cotton cloth to purify, hydrate and gently exfoliate the skin, without leaving it feeling dry.

Our Product Scientist, Dr Liz Gizbourne, says “It literally isn’t Cleanse & Polish™ without the cloth. Once the smooth formulation has done the first cleansing step – dissolving impurities on the skin – the cloth provides the important polishing step. Together they do the cleansing and the polishing.”

How does the cloth work?

The power of the pure cotton cloth lies in its formula. Designed with an open-weave fabric that gently exfoliates and polishes as it moves over the surface of the skin, the cloth effortlessly lifts away impurities and excess oil – leaving your skin feeling perfectly cleansed, fresh and revitalised.

As Dr Liz explains, “The pure cotton cloth is made up of two layers of an open-weave fabric, specially designed to lift the dissolved formulation together with the oil and water-based impurities and any particles of dirt and debris. The cloth also helps gently exfoliate, removing dead cells from the skin surface.”

This unique design ensures that your skin is not only cleansed but also gently polished, enhancing its natural radiance.

Wondering how to use a cleanser? It couldn’t be easier. For fans of double cleansing, our Cleanse & Polish™ Hot Cloth Cleanser is a perfect choice for your first, pre cleanse step, taking the place of an oil-based cleanser.

Simply apply the bio-fusion formula to dry skin, massaging gently over the face, neck and eye area. Next, run the pure cotton cloth under hand-hot water and wring out gently, before polishing off the cream. Work in small, circular motions, taking care over the delicate eye and lip areas. Finish your cleansing routine with a splash of cool water.

The importance of changing the cloth regularly

To maintain the effectiveness of your skincare routine, it’s crucial to keep the cotton cloth clean and replace it regularly. In doing so, you can prevent a build-up of breakout-causing bacteria and continue to get the very best results from your skincare staples.

Dr Liz advises, “As the cloth lifts impurities, formulation and skin cells, it’s important to rinse it and keep it clean. Cloths should be rinsed and then air dried after each use, and then washed every few days. Washing eventually softens the cotton fibres and reduces the exfoliation power – this is the time to replace it. Luckily, old cloths have many uses around the home!”

At Liz Earle, we believe sustainability is key. Once your cloth has served its time in your bathroom, there are lots of different ways to use it. Put it to work in household cleaning tasks, such as wiping down surfaces, dusting or polishing silver and glass, or pop one in your bag to use as a hankie. By reusing your cotton cloth, you can reduce waste, save money and give it a second life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superior range! My husband has been using the Liz Earle men’s range for many years now and is very happy with it. He moved from another range which, he says, was far inferior. No moving him now!
