We know hydration plays a key role when it comes to gorgeous, glowing skin. But can there be such a thing as over-hydration? We discuss the signs & causes of over-hydrated skin and how a Liz Earle regime can help you find a more balanced skincare routine

Hydration is key for keeping your complexion healthy and happy, but there can be too much of a good thing when it comes to moisturising.

Over-hydration happens when the skin absorbs more moisture than it needs,  which can be a result of an excessive skincare routine – for example, if you consistently apply too much product over an extended period of time .

When this happens, the skin barrier may become compromised. Over-moisturised skin may be unable to properly protect itself from external aggressors, and excess moisture can even affect the skin’s natural ability to stay hydrated because it can slow down the production of natural oils.

Over-hydrated skin can sometimes look like dehydrated or dry skin, but, there are some differences to look out for.

Understanding the signs of over-hydrated skin means you can adjust and rebalance your skincare routine before over-moisturised skin becomes an issue. Keeping an eye out for common signs can help you determine whether your skin is over-hydrated.

•    Changes in texture – if your skin feels damp, sticky or greasy, this could be a sign that your complexion is over-saturated and struggling to absorb moisture
•    Breakouts – if you notice more spots and blemishes, this could be a sign of blocked pores which could mean you’re over-moisturising
•    Redness or sensitivity – over-hydration can compromise the skin barrier, making your skin more prone to irritation

If your complexion is showing any of these signs, it could be the result of over-hydration caused by an excessive skincare routine.

It’s also possible to over-hydrate your skin if you confuse dry skin for dehydrated skin, and accidentally overwhelm your skin with too much moisture.

Dry skin is a skin type, which is determined by genetics rather than lifestyle or environmental factors. Instead of lacking water, dry skin has a weaker protective layer of lipids which help maintain a healthy skin barrier.

Dehydrated skin is a skin condition which can affect any skin type. This is usually caused by not drinking enough water, or environmental factors like overexposure to UV rays or colder weather. Hot showers and baths, as well as central heating or air conditioning, can also cause skin to become dehydrated.

Not sure if your skin is dry or dehydrated? If your skin absorbs your moisturiser quickly, it’s likely your skin is dehydrated. If your skin has difficulty absorbing moisturiser or other skincare products and feels rough or flaky in texture, it’s possible that your skin type is dry and lacking in natural oils.

Over-moisturised skin won’t happen if you’re heavy-handed with your moisturiser every now and then. Instead, over-hydration can happen if you consistently apply too much moisture over an extended period.

•    Regularly using multiple heavy moisturisers and oils – thicker or heavy formulas can leave build-up on your skin
•    Layering too many actives or occlusives – this can overwhelm your skin
•    Misreading your skin’s signals – it can be easy to misinterpret your skin as dry when it’s actually over-moisturised

Using too much moisturiser or layering too many skincare products can cause your skin to take on more moisture than it needs, which can overwhelm the outermost layer of the skin. This can clog pores and compromise the skin barrier.

Over-hydrated skin can be less inclined to produce moisture of its own accord because it believes it already has enough of things like water, protein and lipids (ceramides) – AKA, the skin’s most important building blocks.

Over-hydration can damage the skin’s natural lipid barrier, making it more prone to external aggressors. Therefore, it’s important to follow a skincare routine that restores and replenishes your skin’s natural moisture, rather than depleting it.

A good skincare routine will leave your skin feeling smooth, calm and comfortable. Over-moisturising can overwhelm your skin, which can lead to greasiness, breakouts and even sensitivity.

Recognising the signs of over-moisturised skin can help you work out when you might need to make changes to your routine. Read more about the signs of over-hydrated skin below.

If your skin is showing these signs, you might be wondering how to fix over-hydrated skin. Luckily, simplifying your skincare routine and choosing the right products for your skin type can help you achieve happier skin.

Calm overwhelmed skin and rebalance your routine with a simpler approach to skincare. Try cleansing then applying a targeted serum, lighter moisturiser and sunscreen. Give your skin at least a few days to recover, then if you want to incorporate more skincare steps, look for products that suit your skin type.

Can skin really be too moisturised?

While hydration is key for glowing, radiant skin that feels comfortable, over-using very rich products or layering too many skincare products can overload your skin.

What’s the difference between over-hydrated & dehydrated skin?

Overhydrated skin is caused by overusing moisturising products, resulting in changes in texture, breakouts or redness or sensitivity. Dehydrated skin can be caused by different factors, including using harsh skincare products, or the wrong products for your skin type. Dehydrated skin can feel tight and itchy, rough and dry (sometimes while also looking shiny) and lacking in elasticity.

How long does it take to restore balance to over-hydrated skin?

Your skin may take a few days or even weeks to adjust and recover from over-hydration. Be patient, and keep your skincare simple during this time, to avoid overwhelming your skin.

Remember, when it comes to skincare, balance is key and more isn’t always better. If you feel like your skin might be over-hydrated, take it back to basics with a simpler skincare routine while your complexion recovers, then find a regime that’s right for your skin.
