Planning an indulgent evening of solo luxury? An at-home facial is the perfect little pocket of self-care.

For a simple way to reset your regime and give your skin a little restorative boost, read on to discover how to create a facial from the comfort of your own home.

A home facial routine typically includes a few core steps, such as a thorough cleanse, gentle exfoliation, a targeted mask and a nourishing moisturiser. Together, these help to refresh the look and feel of your skin by deeply cleansing and lifting away dullness, adding back hydration and helping to smooth and reduce the appearance of fine lines. With consistency, an at-home facial helps to restore radiance and leave your complexion feeling revitalised.

There’s no set rule for how often you should do a facial, but we’d advise every two to four weeks to help maintain skin health. Pay attention to your skin’s needs and adjust any exfoliating products or masks based on your tolerance.

When it comes to skincare, we know that one approach doesn’t fit all skin types. That’s why using the right products for your skin is key for getting the best results. If you’re not familiar with your skin type, here’s a quick breakdown.

Oily skin needs deeper cleansing with foaming or gel cleansers to help control shine, while dry skin benefits from hydrating cleansers and hydrating masks to help replenish moisture. Those with combination skin should use gentle cleansers, while sensitive skin requires soothing and fragrance-free products that avoid harsh ingredients to help minimise irritation.

An at-home facial is all about enjoying a little pamper, so try to set the scene. Whether you use some essential oils, have a bath beforehand to help you unwind, or simply want to light a candle, it’s all about creating a relaxing atmosphere for a real spa-like experience.

Gather your essentials

Before you get started, make sure you have everything you need for your facial. Reach for a cleanser, exfoliator, a steam setup (if you have one), face mask, toner, serum, moisturiser, SPF and an optional eye cream.

Step 1 – Double cleanse

The most important step of an at-home facial is the cleanse. You want to prep your skin so it’s free from any impurities, giving you a perfect base for the rest of your products.

To ensure your skin is thoroughly clean, opt for a double cleanse using our Cleanse & Polish™ Hot Cloth Cleanser. Allow the first cleanse to dissolve makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum, then go in with the second cleanse to lift away any remaining impurities like sweat, bacteria and dead skin cells. Our powerful bio-fusion formula deeply cleanses and nourishes while maintaining the skin’s natural barrier.

Step 2 – Gentle exfoliation

Next up, exfoliation. This step is all about helping to smooth the feel of skin for a brighter-looking complexion.

Polishes like our Gentle Face Exfoliator are great for gently buffing away dead skin, clogged pores and impurities, to reveal a renewed radiance. This skin-loving formula contains fine jojoba beads for gentle exfoliation and moisturising cocoa butter to help soften skin.

Step 3 – Optional steam

While it’s not for everyone, doing a steam as part of your at-home facial can turn your regime into a spa-like experience. The steam helps to prime your skin by opening pores, softening the skin and loosening surface impurities, leaving you with a healthy-looking glow.

If you don’t own a facial steamer, simply use the steam in the shower or fill a bowl with warm water and place your head and a towel over it for around three to five minutes.

Facial steamers aren’t suitable for people with rosacea, eczema or other sensitive skin conditions as it can trigger flushing.

Step 4 – Apply a targeted face mask

Masks are the ideal time to target specific skin concerns such as breakouts, dullness or dryness, so choosing one to meet your needs can make all the difference.

Clay masks are perfect for oiliness, while a gel or cream mask is a good choice for dry skin. If you have sensitive skin, look for soothing properties.

Perfect for oily and combination skin, our purifying Deep Cleansing Clay Mask is powered by manuka honey and green clay to help draw out impurities and mattify the skin without leaving it feeling dry. For a more nourishing treatment, our Balancing Gel Mask clarifies and hydrates, while refining pores and refreshing skin for a more balanced complexion.

Step 5 – Facial massage

A facial massage is probably the most relaxing part of your facial at home. With benefits like helping to increase blood circulation, improve the appearance of radiance and enhance product absorption, it’s a valuable step to add to your facial at home.

  • Begin with gentle, circular motions and work your way out to the sides of your face.
  • Using light pressure, place your knuckles between your eyebrows and move them up towards your hairline and out to your temples.
  • Then, using your ring fingers, gently tap from the inner corner of your eyes.
  • From here, apply gentle pressure with the pads of your fingers and sweep outwards from the sides of your nose towards your ears, following the natural line of your cheeks.
  • Finish by massaging your jawline, moving outwards and then down your neck, sweeping your hands up.

You can also invest in facial massage tools like a quartz gua sha for a more holistic and indulgent massage.

Step 6 – Tone

Once you’ve finished your massage, soothe your skin by sweeping on some aloe vera, cucumber and chamomile-infused Instant Boost™ Skin Tonic to help refresh and hydrate the feel of skin.

Step 7 – Serum

For this step, you want to choose a serum that’s kind to skin, as you’ve already used an exfoliator, steamer and face mask.

To keep things simple, use a gentle yet hydrating serum like the new Superskin™ Advanced Lift & Define Serum. With an expert blend of acacia tree extract, peptides and powered by Bio-Firm technology, this serum helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, uneven tone and texture.

Massage one-to-two pumps into skin to visibly lift and define, and reveal more sculpted-looking facial contours in just four weeks.*

Step 8 – Moisturise + daily SPF

Complete your at-home facial by locking in all of the benefits with a nourishing moisturiser and SPF. The new Superskin™ Advanced Firming Serum-in-Moisturiser SPF 20 is scientifically proven to boost skin’s elasticity and firmness in two weeks whilst helping protect your skin from UV and future visible signs of sun damage.**

Smooth an even layer over your face, neck and décolletage, and let the acacia tree extract and rosehip oil plump skin with moisture, all while helping to reduce the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles in four weeks.**

Step 9 – Optional eye care

While this isn’t an essential step to finish your at-home facial, an eye cream can help support the delicate eye area, as well as target concerns like puffiness, dark circles and dryness. Our Superskin™ Eye Cream is enriched with plant extracts to help hydrate and brighten the eye area, while reducing the appearance of fine lines.

Can I do a facial at home safely?

Yes, you can do an at-home facial safely, so long as you use the right products and techniques for your skin type.

Do I need steam?

Steam isn’t an essential step for an at-home facial, but it’s a beneficial, optional step. Using a steamer can help open pores for deeper cleansing and allow the products to absorb better.

Should I use retinol on a facial day?

No. Refrain from using retinol on the same day as your at-home facial as it increases skin sensitivity and can sometimes cause irritation when it’s combined with other treatments.

How long will results last?

The immediate results of your at-home facial, like glowing skin, typically last for a few days. This will also depend on the specific products used and how consistent you are with weaving a facial into your skincare regime.
