We get it – with such a vast world of moisturisers out there, it’s difficult understanding which one is the right fit for you. Luckily, no matter your skin type, there’s a Liz Earle moisturiser waiting for you.

Here, we deep dive into moisturisers, including the importance of them in your regime, how to choose the right moisturiser for your skin type and our tried-and-tested Liz Earle recommendations. Scroll on for our moisturiser guide, including our face moisturiser tips for your ultimate skincare regime.

Moisturising is a fundamental step in your twice-daily skincare routine, helping your skin find its perfect balance while helping maintain overall skin health.

Our skin naturally makes its own moisturiser, called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is an incredible skincare ingredient, boosting skin’s hydration while amplifying other ingredients (for example, niacinamide).

However, the body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid decreases with age, which can lead to dry skin, plus fine lines and wrinkles.  So, moisturising is super important to maintain skin’s hydration levels.

Because your skin is unique, there are a range of moisturisers for you to choose from. All Liz Earle moisturisers are formulated with plant-based ingredients to help protect against dryness, while catering to a range of different skin types and concerns, such as dull, sensitive, combination, oily and very dry.

Not sure what skin type you are? From a bird’s eye view:

Dry skin

Causes flaky skin, rough patches, or tightness. It may also feel itchy or like it’s in constant need of moisture

Oily skin

Produces extra sebum, which means the skin typically looks shinier than other skin types. Pores around your T-zone may appear larger, and you may experience more blemishes

Sensitive skin

Prone to discomfort and irritation. Often, rashes and redness can be triggered as a result of factors like weather, or even the use of new skincare products

Normal skin

Normal skin is well-balanced, that typically has a smooth texture with an even tone, and few blemishes. It isn’t oily or dry, and doesn’t typically experience flakiness or shininess

Combination skin

This type of skin is mix of oily and dry skin. This means that different areas of your skin have different characteristics, and should be addressed individually

Find out more about learning your skin type in our dedicated guide.

Not sure how to identify your skin type? Observe your skin throughout the day and try to notice any changes like shininess or tightness. You can also assess your skin after cleansing. For example, drier, tighter-feeling skin can be a sign of dry skin, or shiny-looking skin can be a sign of oily skin.

Depending on your skin type, there are different ingredients to look out for when choosing your moisturiser.

For dry skin, reach for products that offer deep hydration and long-lasting moisture, such as Skin Repair™ Rich Cream.

Oily skin, however, should focus on lighter-feeling products that help to control sebum levels. For example, our Skin Repair™ Gel Cream helps lock in moisture while restoring balance to your skin – great for shine-free, hydrated-looking skin

Sensitive skin should reach for gentle formulas, and our Superskin™ Moisturiser Unfragranced for Sensitive Skin is just that

Although normal skin is well-balanced, it’ll still need moisturiser to maintain normal hydration levels. Try Skin Repair™ Light Cream for up to 72 hours of hydration while feeling lightweight on the skin

For combination skin, try including a mix of products that address oily and dry areas separately. If your combination skin isn’t easily irritated, you can try a moisturiser for normal skin – or use moisturisers designed for oily and dry skin in the areas they’re needed

Gel or cream? Cream or balm? What moisturiser formula and texture is actually best for you?

The biggest different is the feel of textures. Gel moisturisers feel lighter and thinner, while creams feel richer. Balms, on the other hand, will have an even thicker feel.

Depending on your skin type, you may prefer different textures. For example, oily or sensitive skin may want to opt for a gel formula, while dry skin may prefer a cream or balm.

Seasonal factors can also play a part in the best moisturiser for you. In the wintertime, the colder temperatures can make our skin feel drier than usual, so richer moisturisers are great for tackling this. For the summertime, however, warmer weather calls for lighter formulas, helping your skin breathe while still delivering all of that skincare goodness.

To get the best results, apply your moisturiser after you’ve cleansed. If you’re using a serum, make sure to use this before applying moisturiser, too.

First, using your fingertips, gently pat a small amount of moisturiser onto cleansed and toned skin. Then, carefully massage into your face and neck with slow, sweeping strokes in a circular motion.

Want to depuff skin, too? Before moisturising, place your index and middle finger pads just below your ears on your neck, massaging in circular motions. Do the same on the side of your nose bridges, then use your entire hand to massage underneath your armpits. Apply your moisturiser to your face and neck, and before it sinks in, gently massage the skin. Place your knuckles above and below your cheekbones, starting from the middle of your face and working out, dragging your knuckles down through your hairline and to your neck. Repeat this step as many times as you like.

Should I use different moisturisers day and night?

While this isn’t necessary, you can use different moisturisers day and night to help achieve certain skin goals. For example, in the evening, you can use a richer, thicker moisturiser, while during the day, you may prefer a lighter formula.

Can I use a facial oil instead of a moisturiser?

Facial oil and moisturiser both have their place in skincare – but facial oil can’t replace moisturiser. This is because facial oil helps skin feel hydrated and nourished, while moisturiser does what the name suggests: moisturises!

However, you can still use a facial oil in your regime. In fact, try applying your facial oil after moisturising to help lock in all of that hydration.

How often should I moisturise?

Similar to above, it’s best to moisturise your skin twice a day: once in the morning, and then again in the evening as part of your wind-down routine. Make sure to cleanse and tone beforehand, to create the best base to help your moisturiser sink in.

How to layer moisturiser?

The best way to layer your skincare regime is by working with our three-step routine. Cleanse, then tone and finally, moisturise. If you’re interested in adding a facial oil, apply this after moisturiser; for a serum, apply this before moisturiser and after toner.

Finding the perfect moisturiser for your regime may take some trial and error, but understanding your skin type can make the process much easier.
