Aloe Vera

ALOE VERA
(Aloe barbadensis)

Featuring formidable hydrating, soothing and cooling properties, our aloe vera is harvested in the morning to maximise the amount of juice the sword-shaped fronds yield, before being freeze-dried to create a powder.

Calendula

CALENDULA EXTRACT
(Calendula officinalis)

Well-known for its calming and soothing effect on skin, we source our calendula from Egypt, where our ingredient is solvent extracted from the petals of the flower.

Chamomile

CHAMOMILE EXTRACT
(Anthemis nobilis)

Legendary for its skin-soothing properties, the flowers of this aromatic perennial are harvested in England in the summer, before the ingredient is solvent extracted from the fragrant flower.

Cucumber

CUCUMBER EXTRACT
(Cucumis sativus)

Loved for its intensely soothing, cooling and hydrating properties, we source our cucumber from within the UK, where our ingredient is produced from the fresh, green flesh of the vegetable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Instant boost tonic☹️ Have been using Liz Earle Instant boost tonic for the last 6 years.I definitely do not like what you have done to the product.I found it foamy and it has left my skin feeling sticky. The original formula left my skin feeling refreshed and healthy.I can't see myself buying again. Not happy with the change.☹️

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disgusting Toner as changed it no longer makes your skin feel refreshed.my skin feels so dry after using this.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from What's changed? I've been using the skin tonic for years and have loved it....until now! I bought a new bottle last week and used it for the first time today and aside from me not liking the new bottle shape, the skin tonic smells like fairy liquid....it's awful. If it's a permanent change then I'm afraid I won't be buying it anymore. Why change what didn't need changing?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A change too far !! I've been using your products for many years but I'm incredibly disappointed that you've changed the formula of the skin tonic. It really isn't nice any more . It foams on my skin and leaves a tacky finish. It also seems to cause the cotton wool to disintegrate. Why change a winning formula ?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from What have you done to this once fantastic product I have used Instant Boost Skin Tonic for over 8 years and loved the fact it was alcohol free and left my dry skin feeling fresh and hydrated and ready for other skincare. I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I purchased the new version, at first I thought it was just the packaging that had changed, which in itself looks cheap and not like the original packaging but the product itself is awful, it has lost the lovely fragrance if the original, seemed to foam up when applied to the skin but worse of all left my skin red and feeling really dry and after a few days I had breakouts, which I've never experienced with the old version. I have now found another skincare brand and it is far superior. I stopped using cleanse and polish, superskin concentrate and the body washes as all of these seemed to have changed over the years and the last straw was the tonic. I'm afraid you'll be losing many more loyal customers if you continue to change your formulas. Try Nakin skincare products, all natural and made in the UK. Sorry Liz .

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Keen! I tried this as it was recommended to use after the cleanser. I didn't like the origonal and although this is a bit better I don't really like this much either! I still feel better without it and still get lumpy bumpy skin after using it. Sorry but won't be using this again, I'll just use the cleanser on its own with my moisturiser to follow.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Formula Changed I have been using this product for many years. The formula has been changed and it doesn’t really suit my skin anymore, which if I’m honest, I am gutted about. The product foams up on the skin and leaves a tacky feel which isn’t pleasant. The fragrance doesn’t seem to be the same either. It leaves me with a mild tingling/burning sensation when I use this new formula. After giving this a go for a few months I’ve now started searching for an alternative brand, which isn’t an easy task with my skin. It seems like I will have to revert back to my Decleor days which is more expensive and just isn’t as good as I have found Liz Earle over the years. I have read through previous reviews and can see others have had issues too. I have also read the response from Liz Earle explaining that an ingredient in the previous formula has been replaced by a natural one. I hope that LE will revisit the formula again to find another natural ingredient to replace this new substandard one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing Having used Liz Earle for around 8 years now I was really disappointed to find out that the formula for the IBST had changed. The beautiful fragrance has now gone, and the new formula makes my face sting and leaves it sticky. Bring back the old version … PLEASE!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Doesn’t quite seem the same! I have used this product for years but the last few bottles have somehow seemed different to how it used to be. I have always sprayed this onto cotton wool but it now froths up on top of the wool not completely soaking in as it used to do, product smells and feels the same but there is clearly something different!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent I have used the Instant Boost Tonic for years. I love the fresh light smell and the fresh feeling it gives me after my Cleanse and Polish.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Product change I had stocked up on the previous version of the tonic (rectangular and flat bottle) and am using it. I have since flown home to be with family and brought with me a travel size of this new tonic. The formula is very different and I’m really not sure I like it! I usually would have shaken the bottle prior to dabbing on a cotton pad, and with the new tonic it does appear to have foamed up as a result of the shaking. When applying the tonic to my face, it is also foaming up on my face and on the cotton pad. I have tried using less and it does foam up less, but it is still happening. It has only been 6 days, so I can’t confidently comment that changes in my skin are due to the new tonic itself. Im choosing true age range 25-34 but I only just turned 25.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Formula change? I have been buying this for many years. There were 2 things that kept me buying and weaned me off my old alcohol based toner; the wonderful scent and the great bottle design - angular so it fits neatly on a shelf and the great bottle top design. When I got my last bottle I found that the fragrance had gone, replaced with an unpleasant chemical smell, and the toner seemed to foam all over my face when I used it. I thought this might be down to the poor design of the new bottle lid letting too much air in, but when the hinge on the cap broke after I had only used about one quarter of the contents I decanted it into an old style bottle (which I kept because I had a suspicion as soon as I saw it that the new lid would be a very weak point) and it still does the same thing - foamy and tacky on the skin. As for the bottle - it looks and feels like a £5 supermarket purchase rather than a quality brand. Even with my old bottle to keep refilling, I wouldn't buy again unless I was assured that the contents matched up to the old toner I knew and loved. Come clean about changes to formulations of products - your loyal customers have a right to know what they are buying!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So refreshing!! A friend recommended this to me and I am so glad she did, I love the smell of any spa products so this just ticked all the boxes. It wakes me up in the morning and makes my skin feel so fresh and clean. My only ask would be that it was available in a spritz as I absolutely hate the feel of cotton wool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely product I've used this product for years. It just freshens the skin and wipes away any residue of make up or cleansing product from the skin. Smells lovely too.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So disappointed! What has happened to this product?? I have been using it for years and this one is completely different! It doesn’t smell the same, it’s foamy when you use it on a cotton pad, and just doesn’t feel the same as before. Luckily I had a spare in my cupboard which I am now using but once that has finished I will unfortunately be looking for a new toner. So disappointed Liz Earle, please bring back the original toner!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best toner I've tried lots of toners over the years and as someone who has combination skin (even in my late 50s) this is by far the best and the only I use now. I wouldn't be without it during my daily cleansing rituals.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Changed formula. Awful. Really disappointed. I used to use the skin tonic boost spritzer and it made my skin look really dewy. People always commented that I was looking well. This doesn’t have a spritzer and the formula is soapy and not the same. Won’t buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Refreshing I use this morning and night and it’s so refreshing in the morning and soothing at night. It helps my moisturiser soak in so much better

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Why ruin something so good I have used this for years. It was always in a lovely square type bottle with easy opener. Now, suddenly it has been repacked in a round bottle. On the second time of using it, the new cheap hinge broke off on the top. But the content is now completely different. It goes all frothy when you put it on a cottonwool pad. And there is now a horrid smell to it. This was always a best seller. So why ruin something so good. It is now a completely different product - although they don’t tell you that - and it’s horrid.
Date published: 2021-10-30
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible I bought a few bottles of the Toner in the new packaging never thinking to check reviews and see that the formula has also been changed Why would you alter something that works. This new formula smells uneasiness, foams up on your skin and makes it dry. I am going to bin all three and warning everyone I know that the Toner is a changed formula and not for the better either. I'm shocked that Liz Earle has agreed to this change too. I would have given no star if possible.
Date published: 2021-10-30
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Why did you change an already perfect product? The previous version had a lovely delicate fragrance and left your face feeling refreshed. The new version is soapy, takes a long time to dry and the beautiful fragrance has gone. Also, the packaging is not as robust as the bottle lid breaks easily. So disappointing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely fragrance Love using this toner, which is so refreshing with a gorgeous perfume. Look forward to using it every day.
Date published: 2021-10-29
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Smells Awful! What have you done to this brilliant product? It smells awful, dribbles out of the new style bottle and has a sticky, foamy texture, No longer refreshing on the skin. This is not your only product that has changed for the worse. I am a customer of 20+ years but maybe not for much longer!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed Having used Liz Earle for a number of years and found that it works so well on my acne prone skin, I was disappointed to read negative comments when I went to re order the skin tonic. I took the plunge though and thought I would give it a go. As others have said the bottle design is poor, it’s difficult to get the right amount of liquid out, you end up with too much or not enough. It then dribbles down the side of the bottle after you have finished. I’m not sure what was wrong with the old design but it worked perfectly so why change it? The scent is a little different, not unpleasant but not the fresh floral scent we are used too. I didn’t experience foamy on the pad or my face but the back of the pad and my fingers felt a bit soapy afterwards so I can see what people mean when they said this. I feel like it took longer to absorb on my face than the older version but maybe this is because I had used too much due to the poor bottle design?! My face did feel a little tacky afterwards too but not unpleasantly so and again maybe I had used too much? All in all, disappointment from a loyal customer. Please listen to this feedback and consider changing back to the old version!
Date published: 2021-10-26
Rated 2 out of 5 by from New Bottle Design inefficient The lid on the new bottle doesnt allow for you to accurately dispense the amount of product that you want or where you want it. Either too much comes out or not enough - you can't aim to lightly soak the cotton pad as you could with the old design. I thought that I was using too much and that was what was causing the new foamy reaction on my face but it seems the formula has also changed. I can deal with the formula changing but there have been a couple of packaging changes recently that dont make sense
Date published: 2021-10-25
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hate the new bottle Can’t believe they would change something that has been so popular. The new style bottle doesn’t work for me. I will continue using at the moment but might start looking for an alternative product elsewhere

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful The lovely smell has gone, felt like I was putting liquid soap on my skin, skin felt tight after use.Going back to my old toner from a another company. Why change?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from New Bottle Overuse This is my most favourite product of your whole range would be my desert island must have !! However the new bottle & packaging means a lot more instant boost skin tonic comes out onto the cotton wool pad - not as good as the other bottle which allowed you to control how much you used. This means it will be gone quicker (sad face emoji)

Should this liquid be a brown colour ?

Asked by: Carlaj72
I have used IBST for years except when it was reformulated. I then went back to the tonic when it was reverted back to the original and I have never known it to be brown? Please note this style of bottle contains the reformulated tonic.

Is the new packaging?

Asked by: cathy kate
This type of bottle contains the reformulated tonic that everyone, including myself  disliked.   Thank goodness it was changed back to the original formula in the original packaging. Unfortunately I would not recommend this tonic in this bottle.

Can this be used as a spritz?

Yes, I have used this as a spritz but use at arms length to do that. Usually just one spray is enough.

I would also like to know whether LE is doing anything about the change in formula given all the negative reviews. It doesn’t look like anything has progressed in the last 2 months when you said you were working on a solution ….

Asked by: Jones92
You can buy the skin tonic in the original formula if you look on the website..the cleanse and polish is the same as it always was, it still has that lovely smell and it’s thick and creamy and to me hasn’t changed

The 50ml new look bottle states underneath, ‘new look, same product’, however I have one of the new look bottles in the 200ml size and comparing the ingredients with the old bottle there are clearly 2 new added ingredients listed 3rd and 4th. Not as good.
