When it comes to perfecting your skincare routine and getting the most out of your products, cleansing is only the first step – the real magic happens during your post-cleanse skincare routine. While having a thorough cleansing routine is important for removing sunscreen, oil, dirt and pollution, think of the post-cleanse stage as the bridge between cleansing and where visible results happen. So, if you’re looking to take your skincare to the next level, keep reading…

The products and techniques you use in your post-cleanse routine can make or break the look of healthy skin.  From toning, to serums, to moisturising, each step is important in maintaining healthy looking skin.  The key to ideal  skincare routine is to begin in cleansed skin, because clean skin can absorb actives more easily. The ideal time for this is 0-60 seconds  , which is known as the ‘absorption window’ when the skin is still damp and more receptive to active ingredients.

You’re not alone if you’re wondering ‘what does toner actually do?’ Well, a toner is a liquid product that’s used after cleansing to remove further impurities and help refine skin texture . If you need more information on toners, check out our article that explains what  you need to know about toners, essences and bi-phase formulas

Toners penetrate the skin to give it a boost of hydration and help restore  some of the nutrients lost during cleansing. Many are formulated with active ingredients to target skin concerns – including boosting radiance, helping the appearance of dark spots, help refine skin texture and more.

Those with dry skin could benefit from the hydration boost with toners formulated with humectants, which work by attracting moisture into the skin & look for ingredients like chamomile and rosewater which help to soothe and calm the skin. Acne-prone skin should opt for a toner that gently exfoliates and helps support surface cell turnover.

The Liz Earle Instant Boost™ Skin Tonic Toner refreshes and revitalises skin, prepping it for your skincare routine, infused with aloe vera, calendula, chamomile, and cucumber, this alcohol-free formula leaves skin feeling soothed, hydrated and looking radiantly healthy.

You probably don’t need us to explain how powerful those small serum bottles can be, but it’s always great to have a reminder!

If you’re looking to ramp up your skincare routine with a product that offers a bigger, more powerful dose of active ingredients than a cleanser or moisturiser, a face serum is the way to go. They’re designed to give your skin an effective concentration of active ingredients to help the appearance of your skin concerns, with just a few drops. They’re not as runny as a toner, but not as thick as a face cream, and they usually have lots of slip so you can spread them over your face easily. With higher amounts of active ingredients, you should start to see results within three to four skin cycles . Like a toner, serums work best on clean prepped skin – your skin should still be slightly damp from your toner for maximum absorption and efficacy.

If you have blemish or acne-prone skin, you’ll benefit from, while dry skin  loves soothing ingredients like niacinamide or chamomile. Dull skin? A glow-boosting serum will be your best bet – the Liz Earle Restore & Glow™ Instant Radiance Serum is a great choice if you want to transform tired-looking skin to a radiant, luminous complexion.

Moisturisers are just as important as your serums and toners. They lock in hydration and form a barrier on top of your skin to allow the actives to continue working and prevent water loss.

If you have dry or sensitive skin, a cream moisturiser might be best, as they contain more oil which helps to form a thicker barrier to prevent water loss from the skin. Cream moisturisers are the thickest and are great for smoothing dry, flaky skin.

In the middle, we have lotions, which absorb quickly into the skin because of their higher water content with little oil – which is also a plus for acne-prone skin, too. Lotions work well for combination skin and in the summer months when a heavy cream might feel too much.

Gel moisturisers are the thinnest and most quickly absorbing type of moisturiser since they’re formulated with a lot of water and alcohol, which aids fast absorption without any residue.

When applying your skincare products, you always want to layer them from thinnest consistency (usually water-based products) to the thickest consistency (usually oil-based products). This ensures
that actives can absorb into the skin and get to work before your heavier cream layer.

And while we know that life can be busy, don’t be tempted to rush through your routine too quickly. Your skincare products do in fact need time to absorb between layers to get the most out of it. Give each layer of product 30 to 60 seconds to sit on the skin  before going in with the next one for the best results.

Liz Earle Beauty Company has all the products you need to create a full routine, no matter what your skin type or concern might be. Here’s a little reminder…
